For my website I wrote an article on I'll Be by Edwin McCain, but before posting it I would like some feedback on it. Let me know what you think of it, and please mention any grammar/spelling errors.
Btw mods, sorry for posting this in the wrong subforum, if you want you can move it to General Board.
Why the Edwin McCain song I'll be (Your Crying Shoulder) was never covered by the Goo Goo Dolls.

Out of all songs that people think is done or covered by the Goo Goo Dolls, I'll Be (Your Crying Shoulder) by Edwin McCain is without any doubt the song that is mostly mistakenly referred to as a Goo Goo Dolls song or cover. The debate has been running for about a year now and on YouTube people even uploaded little videos trying to prove it's really the Goo Goo Dolls covering that song. So, did the Goo Goo Dolls ever covered or performed this song in their long career? The answer is simple, no they haven't.
I don't just expect you to take my word for it, so here's some proof:
- A cover of this song does not appear on any official (and even unofficial) Goo Goo Dolls album, nor was it ever shared amongst the various Goo Goo Dolls forums.
- Pretty much all of the Goo Goo Dolls fans agree on the fact that the Goo Goo Dolls did never covered this song.
- There's not a single article or website that mentions when, where and/or why the Goo Goo Dolls covered this song.
But most importantly, just download the song from a filesharing network or listen to some different versions of it on YouTube and you can hear for yourself it's Edwin McCain singing it and not John Rzeznik. I have never heard a version that was done by John Rzeznik.
But if this myth is busted, then why do so many people do think the Goo Goo Dolls did indeed covered it? There are a few reasons for that:
- It can sometimes be difficult to hear the difference in Edwin McCain's and John Rzeznik's voices. Also the song "could have been" a Goo Goo Dolls song because it sounds similar to some other songs by the Goo Goo Dolls.
- The Goo Goo Dolls did cover a song called "I'll be there for you" by the Rembrandts.
- When searching for "Goo Goo Dolls - I'll be" on Google, the oldest mention by a website you can find is from lyrics007.com from November 7th, 2003. It's commonly known that lyrics sites copy/steal lyrics from each other and nowadays most lyrics sites mistakenly list this song as being a Goo Goo Dolls song.
- The mislabeled version by Edwin McCain is widely distributed among filesharing networks. This is also most likely the origin of the myth.
If you find someone mislabeling this song, please post a link to this article and ask them kindly to fix it. If you have more information on this subject, feel free to contact me.
