I know some people are reading Esthers tweets and have no idea what it's all about, so I'll give some background information about Dutch elections.
In the last 5 or 6 years we've had 4 parliaments!! all with a Christian-democrat as prime minister. Normally our government is there for 4 years, but none of the last 4 parliaments made it through the full 4 years.
Last March one of the parties in our government (CDA) promised NATO we would stay in Afghanistan, but another party from our government (PvdA) said they promised voters the last Dutch soldiers would leave Afghanistan by August 2010 (or 2011 I'm not sure..). They argued for weeks about it and finally our government fell.
Today we went to vote a new parliament again and things have changed quiet a bit since last time.
- The CDA lost about half their seats in parliament. Also another smaller Christian party lost some.
- The VVD (a right-winged party with a lot of voters who have their own business) is one of the winners of this election with the same amount of votes as PvdA.
- PvdA (social labor-party) also won a little bit compared to last elections.
- PVV (relatively new, they're a party who's most known for being anti-muslim/koran) also won.
- SP (true social party) won huge last time and was about to lose big this time, but in the end their lose wasn't that big.
- Groenlinks (green, left-winged party) won some.
- D66 (democratic party) won a lot compared to last time.
Now things will get interesting, because not all right-winged or left-winged parties can team up with enough seats in parliament to form a government.
So there's quiet a few options.
- VVD + PVV + CDA
- VVD + PVV + some smaller parties
- VVD + PvdA + CDA
- PvdA + CDA + some smaller parties
I voted SP btw.
A few hot topics these elections where:
- Mortgage tax-deduction. Atm people who own houses worth 1 mil dollars still get some money from our government every month to pay their mortgage. A lot of parties think this should change, but other's think touching the house market in a time of crisis would cause it to come to a hold or even collapse.
- How much expenses should be cut down to defeat the aftermath of the crisis. Some parties say Banks and people with huge bonuses should pay the bill for the crisis, while other parties let every pay.
- Healthcare professionals who work in our homes for the elder complain about the huge pressure on their work.
Esther and Judith, correct me if I'm wrong somewhere or if I forget anything.
