By Alex HudsonIn the last couple of years, we've seen high-profile reunion tours by numerous classic bands from the '80s and '90s. Not from the Replacements, however. Aside from two new songs recorded with the partial lineup back in 2006, the band haven't done much since their 1991 breakup. Even though we probably won't be seeing them live any time soon, we're excited to report that director Gorman Bechard is getting set to release a new documentary about the Replacements called Color Me Obsessed.
It's being described as "the potentially true story of the most influential, always drunk, self-destructive and yet frighteningly brilliant rock band of all time as told through the eyes of their fans, followers and fellow musicians." It feature interviews with members of Hüsker Dü, the Ramones, the Hold Steady, the Decemberists and the Goo Goo Dolls, as well as actors Dave Foley and Tom Arnold.
The documentary is finished, and Bechard has started a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for its release. If you pledge $42, you will get an advance DVD screener of the film a full year before it's available in stores. The bigger rewards include an executive producer credit ($800), a dinner with the director ($1,500) and a role in his upcoming movie ($2,500).
As Slicing Up Eyeballs points out, the film will officially premiere on March 26 at the Gasparilla International Film Festival in Tampa, FL. There's no word on when the film will receive a wider release, but you can always head to Kickstarter for one of those DVD screeners if you're impatient.
