After 20-plus years of baring his soul in his music, John Rzeznik decided it was time for him to speak up for others.
"I felt like I needed to say something for somebody else. I'm not a guy in my 20s being a quote-unquote pop star, you know?
"You've got to find something to sing; you better speak your mind before it's too late," Rzeznik said in a recent telephone interview.
The singer and guitarist for the Goo Goo Dolls, who play Pechanga Resort & Casino today and Saturday, tackles topics such as soldiers facing the challenges of leaving war behind when they get home, or the sour economy, on the band's most recent album, "Something for the Rest of Us."
"I think people have really gotten a hold of this album and embraced the message, because there's still a lot of hope in these songs. It's definitely me making social comments on what's going on and sort of the emotional underpinnings of what's going on," he said.
It's the band's everyman quality, whether Rzeznik is writing on a personal level or to the general public, that has led the band from the rust belt to platinum records.
The Press-Enterprise
The Goo Goo Dolls broke into the mainstream with the song "Name," from the 1995 multi-platinum album "A Boy Named Goo."
The Goo Goo Dolls came out of Buffalo, N.Y., paying dues as a punk rock band, eventually moving to Los Angeles and garnering some buzz here and there in the alternative rock world before breaking into the mainstream with the song "Name," from the 1995 multi-platinum album "A Boy Named Goo."
With heavy rotation on MTV and adult contemporary radio stations, the band kept charting with hits such as "Slide," "Iris" and "Black Balloon."
The Goo Goo Dolls will play some of the new material, but expect the band's set to have the radio favorites and some deeper tracks, as well.
"We make a list of all the songs that we've had that were hits, and we start from there, and we work all of the other songs we love playing and the deeper cuts that fans are into so everybody gets a little something that they want," Rzeznik said.
He said he has warm feelings for playing Pechanga.
"It's a good venue. You get a lot of people from all over.
"I've played a couple of casinos out in the middle of nowhere and it's like, 'Oh, my God, everybody in the room is like 70,' " he said, laughing. "Pechanga is one of the hipper places."
