Goo Goo Dolls Make A Triumphant Return Home
It was a great night for an outdoor concert as the Goo Goo Dolls came back home again Friday night. The Darien Lake PAC crowd was treated to an ameliorated show, much more so than the one in 2010. Perhaps the biggest reason for the betterment was the change in set list along with the crowd interaction by singer/guitarist Johnny Rzeznik. Rzeznik seemed more relaxed and put on a display of how to front a band.
The band even took a risk in the fact that they opened up the show with the yet to be released song Last Hot Night In America. That in itself was huge considering the songs in the arsenal that could have kicked off the proceedings. The biggest cheer of the night was at the start of Slide. Once Rzeznik started playing those chords, the intensely excited crowd let out an exalted cheer. In the end it all worked as the band were able to satisfy fans old and new alike. The inclusion of the songs off Superstar Carwash proved to be the key. Fallin’ Down, Lucky Star and Cuz You’re Gone all played in one show at this stage in their career was great to see. Another highlight was the Robby Takac track January Friend off the Dizzy Up The Girl album. The perpetually moving Takac was all over the stage only staying still when it was his turn up at the microphone. All That You Are, another new song from the Transformers Soundtrack was a welcomed addition as well. Closing the show with Broadway, the band came back for a two song encore. A fervid Big Machine followed by Notbroken brought the show to a close.
The upgrade in the show can be contributed to the band listening to their fans. They realize there are fans out there prior to Let Love In. Last year’s set was heavy on the last three albums and ballads. This years set seemed to flow together nicely. The love affair between Buffalo and the Goo Goo Dolls is one that will be notbroken.
Michelle Branch played to a decent crowd for an opening act. Highlights of her set featured the hits Everywhere and All You Wanted. Her stage featured a backdrop with her name and speakers stacked up on it.
Parachute, an up and coming band from Virginia opened the show. The band played a quick thirty minute set. Lead singer Will Anderson promised that after the Goo Goo Dolls show, Parachute would do an acoustic set on the benches outside the main gate. True to his word with a decent crowd gathered around, the band did exactly as promised.
