Apologies if this has been discussed before. Mine in reverse order:
3. I Don't Want to Know - Had never heard the Fleetwood Mac original but the ggd's version kills that treacly mess.
2. Postcards From Paradise - Thought briefly about becoming a social media stalker to petition for it to be played this summer but the SMS role is, um, occupied.
1. American Girl - Particularly the Concert For 9/11 version. Heard it once live too and that was a check off the bucket list.
My also rans:
Don't Change Down on the Corner Catch Me Now I'm Falling

I don't like to tie myself down to permanent favorites, but Hit Or Miss is usually the winner. I adore the three you listed, I love Nothing Can Change You. I love a lot of their covers and think they pick great ones 99% of the time( 1% = Rough Boys). Apologies if this has been discussed before. Mine in reverse order: 3. I Don't Want to Know - Had never heard the Fleetwood Mac original but the ggd's version kills that treacly mess. 2. I didn't know the original until well after I knew the cover and the original is just awful. Sometimes I can almost hear the original in the cover and then I have to turn it off fast. 2. I don't love the original but Paul Westerberg has the BEST version of Postcards From Paradise. I was so so so excited for GGDs to cover it. It doesn't beat Westerberg for me but I do love it. 1. That first recording of American Girl is incredible. Usually when I want to prove to myself how amazing GGDs can be live, that is what I play for myself.

I usually hear the originals of most of their covers after the Goo's version. It's interesting to see how they've been changed. I think I read somewhere that John rewrote the music for I Don't Want To Know because the original didn't work too well with his voice. I love American Girl, I made an old school cassette, then mp3, recording out of that performance from the TV with an audio wire and a walkman. I love Bitch and Catch Me Now I'm Falling, but my 3 favorite covers are: 3) American Girl 2) Slave Girl 1) Postcards From Paradise And though it was never recorded, I love Jenny 867-5309. Too funny!

I think I read somewhere that John rewrote the music for I Don't Want To Know because the original didn't work too well with his voice. I think it was a case of trying to cover it straight and realizing that there was no possible way of doing it without laughing. Personally, I like Postcards, I Don't Want to Know and Nothing Can Change you best. So in other words I am lame and add nothing new. Though, I do like me some Million Miles Away. If you ever hear the original Plimsouls' version, it's almost eerie how close Goo is to it.

Million Miles Away by far.. it could've been a Goo Goo Dolls song. Which reminds me.. did they ever cover a Replacements song?
I love Don't Change and Wait For The Blackout (there is no vision heeeeeeeeeeeheeeeeeeeeeeereeee) too. Oh and Give A Little Bit, very catchy.

I heard the original on the radio the other day, and thought it was the Goo's version at first.

I vaguely remember something like that.. was it at one of their first tours? They used to have over half their setlist made up of covers.

Haha, lame-o here. I thought Million Miles Away was an original ggd song! I OD'd on Give A Little Bit when I first began listening to the band's music so it went to auto skip for a while -- heard it this summer and it sounded really fresh so it's back in my regular rotation. Maybe it was the time and place of the concert but I think that version of American Girl is killer brilliant. If I could only listen to one ggd song ever again (different topic) that would be my candidate. VH1 is re-broadcasting and streaming the Concert For NYC (I got it wrong before) this Sunday at 4pm US EST.

To my knowledge, they've done Left of the Dial. I vaguely remember something like that.. was it at one of their first tours? They used to have over half their setlist made up of covers. They put just a couple verses of Left of the Dial into Name in 1999 at a few shows. John also covered the Replacements in a solo performance in, like, 2004. I believe he covered Achin' To Be but don't quote me on that. No audio or video has ever surfaced.

Good choices all around, guys! I love I Don't Wanna Know, Bitch, American Girl, All I Want is You, and Postcards from Paradise, among others. Also, who could forget Slave Girl?
