Ugh. I had written a long-ass review but it magically disappeared on me so you'll have to settle for a lot less winding one that starts later in the day (given how much I'd written about pre-show, you'll probably thank jebus or something). Still, standard disclaimers apply and yada, yada.
So aside from a series of hilarious car things happening to both Nicole and I's vehicles, mean border agents questioning our friendship and my ability to stay up past midnight instead of plunking more $$$$ in the US economy by staying at a hotel, we got to Erie without much incident (though I was tempted to tweet 'deer count: 2' and not give any context for the lulz. I decided against it in the end).
After doing a drive by of the Warner Theater, oddly enough, we found parking without incident, cheap parking at that too, and parked our butts there. I think one of us praised the Jesus lamp, but that could just be a figment of my imagination. Or whatever.
So walking back over to the venue, we waited for will call to open up so we could get our tickets.
Fun Fact: The Warner is a converted old movie house so will call was in this cute little booth outside:
Fun Fact #2: There were posters for an Alice Cooper show underneath Goo posters. I thought that was rather amusing.
So after getting our tickets and fixing a little mix up (because, obviously you can't have everything go smoothly), Nicole and I killed some time by exploring the theater for a bit and take pictures because it was a purdy, old time-y theater. (Said pictures will be in album link later on.)
Following that, we got back into our seats and waited for Ryan Star to come on. As everyone's said before, his set is rather loud, but I didn't really mind that. Save for a new song and one other one, I knew all of his songs (I'd seen him before and have his album) and he was as good as the first time I'd seen him, was wearing a different shirt and pair tight pants though.Seriously how can this guy even walk? Yes, I'm aware that that comment sounds strange but I think he's as notorious for wearing the same clothes over and over again, more so than John, from what I've heard him say in interviews and seen from pictures.
I recorded a few songs and made the mistake of recording Back of Your Car, forgetting that he was doing this whole, 'Imma handing off my geetar to someone in the audience' thing. It took forever for that song to end. My arm hurt. I didn't upload that mess to YouTube because of said length.
Fun fact #3: Last time I saw him, he had a small child in his arms as he was singing this. I am not giving you the context for fun.
So here are my videos from that:
Ok, now onto Goo.
As Nicole and I were far off to the left, the only way we could see the set list in advance is if we walked over to center stage (there was no rail, just stage) because a monitor was blocking our view of it. I was too lazy and I personally hate looking at sets beforehand so I didn't. I just expected to be shafted song-wise because it was the third night out of three consecutive dates. Sadly, I was right because we only got a one-song encore but I digress because they were chatty and the performance itself was good (high note Iris yaaay!).
Now, if you asked me to sum up Erie, I could do that for you with one picture. And it was this:
(This is what happens when you pause youtube videos without looking to go to another tab and come back to it. Hilarity will always ensue.)
No word of a lie, I had jokingly told Nicole before the concert that whenever I'm off-side like we were then, they always favour the side I'm on for some strange, serendipitous reason.
John was literally hovering around stage right incessantly. And it was distracting as fuck trying to record shit. Especially Robby's shit. And I'm pretty sure it damn well shows in my videos. I was afraid to get my head whacked with a guitar. And it was glorious. It didn't really matter to me that he seemed to be mainly looking at the crowd behind us because it was understandable given the way the Warner is set up (the pit section where we were is sectioned off so there's a bit of a gap between 2nd and 3rd row and on). I liked to pretend that he kept on coming here because I was trying to ignore him at times. Go me. Woo.
So as I said before, the show was good performance-wise and I loved hearing We'll Be Here (When You're Gone) because it's my favourite LLI-era song and I really liked the way that you could really hear the acoustic guitar live as opposed to the muddled studio version. It was easily one of my favorite things of the night. And since I'm not too picky on what I hear so long as it's new (to me, anyways), it was kinda neat hearing Become too even though I don't really care for the studio version (I can usually tolerate songs I don't like if they're played live, for whatever reason...which probably explains why I was happy hearing GALB in Houston).
Also, as an aside, because there was so much smoke/fog/whatever it was coming out of the machines they had, sometimes it would make Robby's bass look like there were laser beams shooting from it. I wish I could have gotten a pic of that. That was awesome.
So aside from skimping out on Sympathy, I thought it was a pretty good show. Now all I have to do is shut off the part of my brain that decides that it absolutely needs to rank shows and I'll be all set. Probably not gonna happen though.
Oh, and the border agent on the way home also questioned my friendship with Nicole, ability to get from Erie in less than 2 hours and my job status (lack thereof, really). It's a new friggin' record, folks. Ugh.
So anyway, here are my mostly-lackluster photos: s477.photobucket.com/albums/rr132/Emerald-Latias/Goo%20Goo%20Dolls%20Erie%2011%2013%2011/
And here is my metric fuckton of videos (yes, 9 constitutes as a metric fuckton):
