Ordinary People with Timothy Hutton used to be my favourite film for many years, but now it's probably Lord of the Rings...I'm hoping Deathly Hallows 1 & 2 will be on this list soon...
Here are my other faves, in no particular order:
A History of Violence The Matrix Harry Potter movies Secretary The Usual Suspects Silence of the Lambs
I'll add a few more later...

I have so many, but I'll try to narrow it down to at least 10.
(In no particular order)
If Lucy Fell The Other Sister Some Kind of Wonderful ...Say Anything Benny & Joon Steel Magnolias Girl Interrupted Halloween (the original) Wuthering Heights (the original) Mad Love
These movies all had/have a profound effect on me for one reason or another. I can (and do) watch them over and over again.

Oh, of course all your movies are reminding me of some I missed, like the original Star Wars (saw it at the theater as a child) and of course I love Die Hard. Alan Rickman was awesome in it and so was Bruce Willis. I got my son to watch it, and it's his fave movie. It still holds up today. You can tell it's an old movie when the hero is smoking in the film... Yippie-ki-yay, motherfucker.

All this talk of Die Hard made me remember that while I don't like 1 & 2, Die Hard 3 is quite possibly my favourite action movie ever. Jeremy Irons as the bad guy? Hazel is in heaven ;D

I just remembered that I forgot to put (500) Days of Summer, Transformers and Eagle Eye on my list. These movies just keep on poppin' into my mind. I don't know which Die Hard is my favorite but I really like the 2nd one. And it's not because Renny Harlin has directed it. Bruce Willis is just yummy, that's it.
